Des McKenna O.A.M – Woodcarver & Sculptor

'Molly' the Wombat

Carved for the Castlemaine Art Festival in February it created a great deal of interest
at the new exciting Art Space “LOT 19” at lot 19 Langslow Rd Castlemaine.

After the Festival, Des, Carmel and Sam Dhingra offered the sculpture to the people
of Malmsbury through the Friends of MalmsburyGardens and Environs who gratefully accepted the gift.

It is now displayed in the “Village Green” on the Calder Highway Malmsbury just near
the children’s school crossing opposite the village shops where it gets a great amount
of attention particularly before and after school.

The wombat is carved from a River Red Gum log 1.1 metres long and fixed to a concrete
pad on the green. It has glass eyes.

A competition was held among the children attending MalmsburyPrimary School to give
the wombat a name. The winner was Nicholas Gray.

The name given was announced on 14 th December 2005:

“MOLLY the Mollison St WOMBAT”

Mollison St is the section of the Calder Highway through the township of Malmsbury
where “MOLLY” is located.
